MISSHOOPDIDOO
WORKSHOP
‘Advanced Hoop Dance’ — Feel like your tech is on point? Craving ways to enhance your hooping? The intention of this class is to explore the ways we can move our body while manipulating our hoop. You'll learn to use your body as a prop just as much as - if not more than - your hoop...no more hiding behind your prop! In the peak of this class, we will learn a fun, sassy and challenging hoop dance routine (emphasis on the dance). This class is "advanced" because we will learn new concepts outside of our hula hoop and fully integrate dance technique into our flow, however, anybody can participate and excel. Get ready to get weird, because we are diving deep into the world of body movement!

‘Safer Fire Dancing’ — In “safer fire dancing,” you’ll learn the foundations of fire spinning, beginning with how to put together and improve your fire spinning kit, and best practices for developing safer and more inclusive jam spaces, whatever your budget. Building on this knowledge, we’ll explore ways to structure a hoop burn into a dynamic improvised performance. This workshop is a chance to ask questions, learn about new gear, and build confidence around performing with fire and supporting other fire performers. This workshop is geared towards those new to fire dancing and performing or those who’d like to start or improve the jams in their community. Open to single or multiple hoop artists of all levels.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Kate Tutty or Kata (@kata.kali) is a Canadian photographer, multi-prop performance artist, and fire-arts mentor with an affinity for community building. In 2011 - 10 years ago - she discovered hoops during a stay at the Yashodhara Ashram in Nelson, BC. Feeling challenged yet inspired, she co-founded a popular hoop-focused flow arts club at her University. Her passion for hoops and hosting evolved into the Fernwood Burn Club (@fernburn_club) in 2019 as she focused her energy on the fire arts.
Over the past decade of flow arts training, teaching and performing, highlights include workshops at the 2013 Victoria International Juggling and Flow Festival, performances at the 2016 Shambhala Music Festival, Jungle Jam in Costa Rica, and the 2018 West Coast Circus Camp. She’s also dedicated 5-years to supporting productions, including the fire circles and stages of Black Rock City.
Kata’s teaching style - inspired by her studies of yoga, Qi Gong, trauma, and breathwork - seeks to move beyond tech and drills and to channel flow states into deeper levels of embodiment and authentic self-expression. In the past two years, during the height of Covid-19, her work with the Fern Burn Club transformed a local skate park into a socially distanced LGBTQ-friendly subculture hub. With support from grants and donations, the Club provides a safer training space for a network of 50 local and travelling professional and hobbyist fire artists. She loves to share her passion for the flow arts through photoshoots, performing, group and one on one sessions that focus on integrating somatic and dance techniques into flow practices. She, her hoops, and her camera are thrilled to return to Costa Rica for this retreat!
